The purpose of this dataset is to identify the operational areas for heavy vehicles in Queensland. Transport operators should consult the Operational Areas and the Routes and Restrictions datasets in order to be compliant. In areas where Routes and restrictions are conflicting with the underlying operational area, the routes and restrictions dataset prevails.

Maps for multi-combination heavy vehicle routes and restrictions are currently published on the Department of Transport and Main Roads website. These maps are referred to as "Paper Based" maps, and they delineate heavy vehicle access within specified areas of interest throughout Queensland (mostly within regional towns and built-up areas.) Outside of these mapped areas, multi-combination heavy vehicles are granted access according to the "Operational Area" designation. This dataset depicts the extent of operational areas for multi-combination vehicles. (Please note that in the past, Operational Areas have been referred to as "Shaded Areas".) Outside of these Operational Areas, (including holes or gaps in the Operational Area Layer) signifies that a paper based map exists for that area, and that the Multi-Combination vehicles are granted access on approved routes only.
Transport operators should consult the both the Operational Areas and the Route Maps and Restrictions in order to be compliant.
Heavy vehicle routes and restrictions are also published on Queensland Globe. With the introduction of Queensland Globe, paper based maps will be phased out. The service provided by Queensland Globe will eventually replace the service offered by the paper based maps and the operational areas datasets. In the future, this operational areas dataset and the paper based maps will be retired together at the same time.

This dataset describes operational areas throughout Queensland that are approved or restricted for use by various types of heavy vehicles.
The Operational Areas dataset complements the heavy vehicle routes and restrictions datasets, however not all heavy vehicle routes have an applicable operational area. The CODE field is used to match with the ROUTE_CODE field from the Routes dataset, and the ROUTE_IMPACT field in the Routes Restrictions dataset. In areas where Routes and restrictions are conflicting with the underlying operational area, the routes and restrictions dataset prevails.
