<idAbs>This dataset comprises the ‘best available’ agricultural land class (ALC) data – land classes A, B, C and D. ALC mapping identifies agricultural land that can be used sustainably for a range of land uses with minimal land degradation. The classes imply a decreasing range of land use choice and an increase in the severity of limitations and/or land degradation hazard.</idAbs>

<suppInfo>The data is sourced from individual soil surveys in the Queensland Governments corporate soil information system (SALI). Priority is generally given to newer and/or more detailed mapping. It has been compiled from a wide range of land resource surveys that were conducted over many decades. The scale, reliability and confidence in those surveys and the interpretation of data into ALC varies considerably. It ranges from high intensity land suitability mapping (1:25 000) to low intensity land-systems mapping (1:500 000). On occasion 1:1 000 000 scale survey data has been used. Generally the higher the intensity, the more accurate the interpretation of the ALC. Detailed land resource surveys and more intensive land suitability assessments are considered to give greater reliability and accuracy in the creation of ALC mapping products, regardless of cartographic scale. It is important to note that the data is not intended to be used at the property scale.
The majority of the 1:100 000 scale or better land resource survey projects have been re-interpreted from land suitability studies. Class A land based on land suitability data is land that is suitable for four or more current and potential crops with nil to moderate limitations to production. Class B is land that is suitable for three or fewer crops; and is suitable for sown pastures. Class C is suitable only for improved or native pastures due to limitations that preclude continuous cultivation for crop production. Class D is land that is not suitable for agricultural uses due to extreme limitations, including land alienated from agricultural uses. Mapping also includes areas of ‘Incomplete Data’ where more investment is required to adequately characterise the ALC and ‘No Data’.
For much of Queensland, the ALC layer has been derived from broad scale land-systems mapping. Land-systems are recurring patterns of geology, topography, soils and vegetation. Land-systems are generally heterogeneous, particularly in relation to ALC i.e. the land-system may contain areas of land with differing ALC. The adoption of concatenated ALC codes has increased the ability to convey the nature of the variation in ALC within a land system. For example concatenated ALC have been used when the land-system could be a mix of steep hills (C3) and gently sloping arable landscapes (A2); with a resulting ALC of C3/A2. This can overestimate the area of Class A and B land if the highest rank ALC is selected for that mapping unit, even though it is the subdominant land unit. The scale of land-systems mapping of 1:250 000 is generally considered insufficient to provide an accurate or reliable ALC determination in areas under pressure from competing land uses. The state-wide ALC dataset is to be updated annually, and is date stamped. Annual changes to the data are generally associated with data improvements where new data has been collected, new projects released, errors fixed, or older data has been reviewed or updated to ensure greater consistency with the definitions of Class A and B land. The most up to date data set should be used.</suppInfo>
