Native to Mexico and the United States, snake cactus is an emerging threat and has been recorded as naturalised in parts of Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia. Snake cactus poses a significant threat to large areas of inland Queensland. Its thorns can cause injury to stock, wildlife and humans and it has the potential to form impenetrable thickets in arid and semi-arid grasslands and woodlands, with significant impacts on grazing production and property values.

Map layer extracted from Biosecurity Queensland pest distribution survey displaying distribution of individual invasive weed species.
Cholla: snake cactus
weeds", "pests"
}
