<suppInfo>The Queensland Department of Environment and Science’s Koala Habitat Suitability Model (HSM) within the South East Queensland Regional Plan area used a categorised Maxent model output (based on key biophysical variables with a statistically tested relationship to koalas) in combination with an expert derived Regional Ecosystem (RE) classification and koala occurrence records. The model used a set of decision rules (matrix) to determine which areas are considered ‘core’, ‘non-core’ and ‘non-habitat’. For detailed information relating to the methodology and rule set employed to delineate Phascolarctos cinereus (koala) habitat within the SEQ Regional Plan area, refer to the accompanying report (DES, 2020) available from the Department of Environment and Science’s Biodiversity Assessment Team – biodiversity.planning@des.qld.gov.au.
Restoration areas were identified using a Marxan scenario that considered important areas to restore habitat based on a draft koala HSM and to attribute an ecological cost to threat, constraint, opportunity and resilience modelling to identify preferred restoration areas. The Marxan scenario targeted cleared areas within the Koala HSM matrix rulesets 351, 350, 341 and 340 (all areas ranked high on the Maxent and ranked high or very high for Regional Ecosystem). Please note that non-target land uses (e.g. lakes, roads, dwellings) that have occurred since the clearing of regional ecosystems were not been removed from this layer. After feedback from local government, further refinement removed areas in the mapping where restoration was considered unsuitable in certain planning scheme zones or areas (such as urban areas including residential, centres, industrial and related infrastructure). However, relevant areas were retained where an environmental corridor (or biodiversity area) was present.

<measDesc>The KPA restoration areas were within the following area: South East Queensland Regional Planning area 2017.
Within the overall HSM extent, the completeness of the assessment cannot be quantified. Completeness of the modelled output with respect to delineating on ground habitat and confidence of occurrence, for example, is dependent upon known observations of the species (rather than the species “true” on ground distribution), expert interpretation in terms of the species habitat preference (based upon available knowledge at the time) and the completeness of base dataset inputs (i.e. the Queensland Herbarium’s regional ecosystem mapping product).

<statement>The restoration mapping (KHRA) was produced by the Department of Environment and Science staff based upon the methodology set out in the report (DES, 2020). For specific information relating to the methodology and rule set employed to delineate Phascolarctos cinereus (koala) habitat restoration areas, refer to the accompanying documentation (available from the Department of Environment and Science’s Biodiversity Assessment Team – biodiversity.planning@des.qld.gov.au). Polygon slivers with an area of less than 0.25 hectares and pinch points of 1 metre or less have been removed from this dataset.
Source data: The following key base data sets were used in production of KHRA:
1. The Koala Habitat Suitability Model v1.0 developed by the Department of Environment and Science.
2. Koala Priority Areas (KPAs) v1.0 developed by the Department of Environment and Science.
3. DES’s Marxan output scenario 208 – run 3 Target 90,000 ha of former habitat on matrix rules 351, 350, 341 and 340 within KPA areas. The ecological cost layer included roads, heat stress, climate change, urban development, extractive industries, conservation management zones, current koala bushland habitat in PKADAs and KADAs, and resilience refugia. NB for further information on the base inputs used to develop the Marxan scenario, refer to DES accompanying documentation.
4. Zoning and environmental data for the suitable area refinement was acquired through local government directly or open data in September 2019. Regional biodiversity corridors under the Shaping SEQ Regional Plan were also acquired and Department provided koala restoration properties. Zones and precincts were interpreted to zones under the Planning Regulation 2017. Ranking was applied to the zoning and environment corridor data to apply the restoration areas only to “potentially suitable zones”, “environment corridors” or “existing koala restoration areas”. The final areas were refined to identify "potentially suitable areas" and "potentially unsuitable areas".
