Locally Refined Koala Habitat Areas (LRKHA) were developed to include areas of koala habitat that were important in a local government context but which were not considered core koala habitat in the Government’s Koala Habitat Suitability Model (HSM) v1.0 in SEQ.

To address the transition of the responsibility for koala habitat conservation from local government to state government, local governments were asked to identify locally significant koala habitat areas that formed part of their koala conservation efforts. These are known as locally refined koala habitat areas (LRKHA).
Local government regulates areas of koala habitat that are not included in the Government’s koala habitat areas. These are not included because, for example, they were not considered remnant vegetation or high value regrowth or because they were too fine scale or made of scattered trees rather than a vegetation ecosystem.
To provide continuous regulatory protection for the locally identified koala habitat for a 2-year period, all SEQ local governments provided details of areas for inclusion.

The results encapsulated the following area: South East Queensland Regional Planning area 2017.
The LRKHA was produced by the Department of Environment and Science staff based on datasets from the different LGAs. For information on the methods and data sources, please refer to the accompanying documentation (available from the Department of Environment and Science’s Biodiversity Assessment Team – biodiversity.planning@des.qld.gov.au). Polygons with an area of less than 0.25 hectares. Polygon slivers with pinch points of 1 metre or less have been removed from this dataset.
Source data: The following key base data sets were used in production of the LRKHA:
1. The base spatial units were derived from koala habitat supplied by local governments based on a variety of sources (see DES 2020 for details).
2. Regulated vegetation management map (RVM) v3.05 dated 27 November 2019 produced by Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy.
3. Property maps of assessable vegetation (PMAV) dated 17/12/2019 produced by the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy.
4. Regional ecosystem mapping for Queensland version 11 (2018), updated in January 2020. Queensland Herbarium, Department of Environment and Science.
5. High Value Regrowth mapping (November 2019), updated in January 2020. Queensland Herbarium, Department of Environment and Science.
