<suppInfo>Fisheries resources are identified as a State Interest with respect to Agriculture as a mechanism for Economic Growth. The state's interest in planning for agriculture is intended to reduce the potential for conflict between other uses, protect resources from inappropriate development, minimise encroachment to ensure viable tracts of agricultural land are maintained and improve opportunities for increased agricultural production and diversification.
The data layer assists in the determination of the spatial extent of freshwater and tidal wetlands, streams, riparian areas and other habitats which either support or contribute to fisheries resources.
Planning is the ideal stage for options assessment to occur to avoid impacts and for the inclusion of buffers to protect fish habitats and fisheries resources. Fisheries resources are defined under the Fisheries Act 1994 to include fish and marine plants.
By identifying areas host to fisheries resources, local planning instruments are able to better reflect State interests by appropriately managing agricultural land and fisheries resources from land uses that compromise the long-term productivity of agriculture and fisheries.</suppInfo>

<dataLineage>
<statement>This dataset is a subset of the "Queensland Wetland Mapping - Version 5 - wetland lines" and " Queensland Wetland Mapping - Version 5 - wetland areas (2017)" datasets, which provide mapping of water bodies and wetland regional ecosystems at 1:100,000 scale across Queensland, likely to host fisheries resources.
The dataset is produced by combining (by merge) the buffered “wetland lines” and selected “wetland areas” features.
The “wetland lines” data was converted from polyline to polygon by applying a 0.05m buffer, as a representation of the location of waterway features likely to host Fisheries Resources.
The wetland areas data is produced by excluding features based on a SQL expression. The SQL expression consists of two parts.
1 SQL Expression Part One
The first part of the SQL Expression is enclosed by brackets. It selects all ‘Marine’, ‘Estuarine’ and ‘Unclassified’ wetland systems but excludes the following features:
1.1 ‘Local Hydrological Modifier Code’ of ‘H2M6’ and ‘H3C2’ (‘Modified – controlled hydrology, unspecified’ and ‘Artificial wetlands – channel, canal’).
2 SQL Expression Part Two
The second part of the SQL Expression is separated out by the OR operator that, because of the enclosing brackets, applies to the rest of the where clause. It selects all ‘Lacustrine’, ‘Palustrine’ and ‘Riverine’ wetland systems, excluding the following features:
2.1 ‘Local Hydrological Modifier Code’ of ‘H2M5’ (‘Modified - gross mechanical disturbance, cultivated’).
These features appear to be historic waterbodies, which the great majority are now shown in the middle of cane paddocks etc, with no habitat value.
2.2 ‘Local Hydrological Modifier Code’ of ‘H2M6’ (‘Modified - controlled hydrology, unspecified’) and ‘Salinity modifier code’ of ‘S3’ (‘Saline’).
H2M6 are described as "Modified - Converted to Controlled Storage", and despite their modification still provide acceptable habitat for fish. Features with a SALINMOD of S3 are described as "Saline” and are generally Aquaculture Ponds.
Habitat Code: 40
Habitat Type: Artificial/ highly modified wetlands (dams, ring tanks, irrigation channel)
2.3 ‘Local Hydrological Modifier Code’ of ‘H3C1’ (‘Artificial wetlands - unspecified’) and ‘Salinity modifier code’ of ‘S3’ (‘Saline’).
H3C1 are described as "Artificial Dams and Ringtanks", and despite their modification still provide acceptable habitat for fish. Features with a SALINMOD of S3 are described as "Saline", and are generally Aquaculture Ponds, Sewerage Treatment or evaporative ponds.
Habitat Code: 40
Habitat Type: Artificial/ highly modified wetlands (dams, ring tanks, irrigation channel).
2.4 ‘Local Hydrological Modifier Code’ of ‘H3C2’ (‘Artificial wetlands - channel, canal’) and ‘Salinity modifier code’ of ‘S3’ (‘Saline’).
H3C2 are described as "Artificial Wetlands - Channels and Canals", and despite their modification still provide acceptable habitat for fish. Features with a SALINMOD of S3 are described as "Saline", and are a small group of Aquaculture Ponds north of Townsville.
Habitat Code: 40
Habitat Type: Artificial/ highly modified wetlands (dams, ring tanks, irrigation channel).</statement>
