The marine park zone attributes are based on the descriptions found in the Marine Parks (Great Barrier Reef Coast) Zoning Plan 2004, the Marine Parks (Great Sandy) Zoning Plan 2024 and the Marine Parks (Moreton Bay) Zoning Plan 2019.
The marine park boundaries are based on the descriptions found in Schedule 1, Schedule 2 and Schedule 3 of the Marine Parks (Declaration) Regulation 2006. The zones within each marine park are based on the descriptions in the Marine Parks (Great Barrier Reef Coast) Zoning Plan 2004, the Marine Parks (Great Sandy) Zoning Plan 2024 and the Marine Parks (Moreton Bay) Zoning Plan 2019.
The Commonwealth's Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) zoning is used for the Great Barrier Reef area. Zonings that follow existing State Marine Parks are derived from written descriptions in the Marine Park zoning plans. The coastline for the Great Barrier Reef area was obtained from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA). Important Note: a management decision was made to eliminate slivers (3 metre clean) between GBRMPA coastline and GBRMPA zoning coastline to create EPA estuary zonings. Additional sources include coastal buffering. Some zoning polygons were plotted using geographic coordinates.
The coastline for the Moreton Bay Marine Park was derived from various sources including the DCDB, the EPA's highest astronomical tide (HAT) dataset, the EPA's estate, the EPA's designated downstream limits (DDL), NRW's mean high water springs (MHWS) coastline, orthophotos and Spot imagery. The zoning data for Great Sandy Marine Park was developed as part of a comprehensive review of the zoning plan for Great Sandy Marine Park (GSMP). It provides a representation of the zones defined by ‘metes and bounds’ descriptions in Schedule 1 of the Marine Parks (Great Sandy) Zoning Plan 2024.
