<suppInfo>Essential Habitat is vegetation in which a species that is Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable or Near Threatened under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 (NCA) has been known or highly likely to occur. One of the purposes of the Vegetation Management Act 1999 (VMA) is to regulate vegetation clearing in a way that prevents the loss of biodiversity. To fulfil this obligation, Vegetation Management within the Department of Resources (Resources) uses the Essential Habitat map as a tool when assessing vegetation clearing applications to assist in determining whether certified vegetation is habitat for Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable or Near Threatened species. The Biodiversity Assessment Team, Department of Environment and Science (DES) provides Essential Habitat to Resources for certification under the VMA.
Modelled essential habitat was compiled from recognised species habitat models. These are habitat models that have been developed in collaboration with experts. For example, some of the models have been developed through recovery planning activities, whilst others, from application of the Biodiversity Assessment and Mapping Methodology (BAMM) (DEHP, 2014). Modelled habitat depicted in this dataset may include both remnant and non-remnant areas. For further information refer to the Technical documentation (ehab_v12_0_tech_doc) and Lineage section below.
This dataset incorporates core modelled habitat for the following Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable and Near threatened species: - Boronia keysii. - Calyptorhynchus lathami lathami (glossy black-cockatoo). - Casuarius casuarius johnsonii (Sthn. population cassowary). - Crinia tinnula (wallum froglet). - Denisonia maculata (ornamental snake). - Euastacus bindal - Euastacus binzayedi - Euastacus eungella - Euastacus hystricosus - Euastacus jagara - Euastacus maidae - Euastacus monteithorum - Euastacus robertsi - Litoria cooloolensis (Cooloola sedgefrog). - Litoria sp. cf. cooloolensis (North Stradbroke Is population). - Litoria freycineti (wallum rocketfrog). - Litoria olongburensis (wallum Sedgefrog). - Macadamia integrifolia. - Macadamia ternifolia. - Macadamia tetraphylla. - Melaleuca irbyana. - Petaurus gracilis (mahogany glider). - Petrogale coenensis (Cape York rock-wallaby). - Petrogale penicillata (Brush-tailed rock-wallaby). - Petrogale persephone (Proserpine rock-wallaby). - Petrogale purpureicollis (Purple-necked rock-wallaby). - Petrogale sharmani (Sharman’s rock-wallaby). - Pezoporus wallicus wallicus (Eastern ground parrot). - Phascolarctos cinereus (koala). - Taudactylus pleione (Kroombit tinkerfrog). - Xeromys myoides (water mouse). All model species were updated to accommodate the QLD Herbarium’s Version 13 regional ecosystem mapping, with the following exceptions: • Taudactylus pleione model was not updated, as it incorporated finer scale mapping and aerial photographic interpretation. • Calyptorhynchus lathami, Boronia keysii and Macadamia sp. models are externally produced (no updates were received from the custodian). Taxonomic nomenclature and status were updated based upon the WildNet taxonomy table (extracted 25/1/2023). </suppInfo>

• Pezoporus wallicus wallicus (Eastern ground parrot).
• Taudactylus pleione (Kroombit tinkerfrog).
• Xeromys myoides (water mouse).
All model species were updated to accommodate the QLD Herbarium’s Version 12
regional ecosystem mapping, with the following exceptions:
• Petrogale persephone and Taudactylus pleione models were not updated, as they incorporated finer scale mapping and aerial photographic interpretation.
• Calyptorhynchus lathami, Boronia keysii and Macadamia sp. models are externally produced (no updates were received from the custodian).
Taxonomic nomenclature and status was updated based upon the WildNet taxonomy table (extracted 30/03/2021), with manual updates to accommodate Species Technical Committee (STC) changes that were applied to the NCA regulations on 30/04/2021.
Version 9.0 - As per version 8.1, with the following alterations/updates:
Incorporated updated core modelled habitat for the following species:
• Casuarius casuarius johnsonii (Sthn. population Cassowary). Endangered.
• Xeromys myoides (Water Mouse). Vulnerable.
Three new models (core habitat) were added in SEQ for the following Macadamia species:
• Macadamia integrifolia. Vulnerable.
• Macadamia ternifolia. Vulnerable.
• Macadamia tetraphylla. Vulnerable.
Applied an RE, HVR and LRKHA erase to all models in the ShapingSEQ planning area. This erase layer was developed for the koala habitat project but is applicable to any habitat models.
Version 8.1 - Incorporated updated koala habitat model. This is the same base model but with the following differences to v8.0 :-
• Inclusion of the extra matrix row 4 ie Maxent = Medium, RE Suitability = High, Medium or Low and Record = no.
• Attributed to remnant and HVR only.
• Removal of core habitat from most islands.
• Removal of isolated polygons <0.25ha.
• Removal of koala habitat on PMAV cat x.
• Alignment with the ShapingSEQ boundary.
Southern Cassowary habitat model refined to exclude all islands other than Hinchinbrook Island based on expert derived taxon profile.
Applied an RE, HVR and LRKHA erase to all models in the ShapingSEQ planning area. This erase layer was developed for the koala habitat project but is applicable to any habitat models.
Version 8.0 - This dataset incorporates core modelled habitat for the following Endangered, Vulnerable and Near threatened species:
• Boronia keysii. V.
• Calyptorhynchus lathami (Glossy black cockatoo). V.
• Casuarius casuarius johnsonii (Sthn. population Cassowary). E.
• Crinia tinnula (Wallum froglet). V.
• Denisonia maculata (Ornamental snake). NT.
• Litoria cooloolensis (Cooloola Sedgefrog). NT.
• Litoria sp. cf. cooloolensis (North Stradbroke Is population). NT.
• Litoria freycineti (Wallum Rocketfrog). V.
• Litoria olongburensis (Wallum Sedgefrog). V.
• Melaleuca irbyana. E.

• Xeromys myoides (Water Mouse). V.
Re-incorporated habitat models for Litoria cooloolensis and L. cooloolensis (North Stradbroke population). These models were previously excluded due to the removal of NT species from Essential Habitat.
Excluding the Petrogale Persephone and Taudactylus Pleione modelled outputs, the remainder of the above listed species were updated using the QLD Herbarium’s Version 11 regional ecosystem mapping. The Petrogale Persephone and Taudactylus Pleione models were not updated with the latest regional ecosystem version, as they incorporated finer scale mapping and aerial photographic interpretation. The Calyptorhynchus lathami and Boronia keysii models were not updated with the latest regional ecosystem version, as they are externally produced models and there was no update received from the custodian. Both the Melaleuca irbyana and Denisonia maculata model methodologies intentionally incorporate areas of non-remnant core habitat.
Version 7.1 - Other than the following exception, no changes/updates to the version 7.0 dataset have been applied. Incorporated updated core modelled habitat for the Phascolarctos cinereus (koala). A new methodology has been developed and applied to the majority of the SEQ Regional Planning area. For the remainder of the SEQ Bioregion, the previous koala habitat suitability model applies.
Version 7.0 - The same changes were applied for the purpose of version 7.0 as listed for version 6.0, subject to the following two exceptions: a) In addition to the inclusion of Endangered and Vulnerable taxa under the NCA, Near Threatened taxa were also included, and b) A new extract was undertaken of all NCA Endangered, Vulnerable and Near Threatened species records from source databases.
Version 6.0 – Updated essential habitat to Vegetation Management Act (VMA) 2009 (July, 2017). This dataset accounted for all NCA species status regulation changes that occurred since the previously released version 4. These changes occurred in December 2014 (status downgrade of some Endangered and Vulnerable species to Near Threatened or Least Concern), August 2015 (status upgrade to Endangered and Vulnerable for selected species) and May 2017 (incorporated both status upgrades and downgrades to Endangered and Vulnerable for selected species).
Version 5.0 - This version was not released. This dataset incorporated two previous NCA species status regulation changes that occurred since the previous version. These changes occurred in December 2014 (status downgrade of many Near Threatened species) and August 2015 (status upgrade to Endangered and Vulnerable for selected species). A new extract was undertaken of all NCA Endangered and Vulnerable species records from source databases. Flora records were sourced from Herbrecs (via WildNet), and fauna from the QLD Historical Fauna Database (QHFD). Point records from all bioregions were included, with the exception of the Koala, for which records were excluded which fell within the SEQ bioregion.
Version 4.0 – Updated essential habitat to Vegetation Management Act (VMA) 2009 RE Version 7.0 (September 2011). All models of Endangered and Vulnerable species from previous version re-run on the new RE layer. New additional model added for the coastal sheathtail bat. New download of all point records from source databases. Flora records sourced from Herbrecs (via WildNet). Point records from all bioregions were included. Near Threatened species records and habitat models were excluded. Final layer was not clipped to remnant. Updated factors database based on RE Version 7.0 (September 2011). Name changed from VMA Essential Habitat to Essential Habitat.
Version 3.1 – No changes since version 3.0. This is a point release without any alteration.
Version 3.0 – Updated essential habitat to RE Version 6B (May 2009). All models re-run on the new RE layer. Modeled areas of essential habitat were updated in September 2009 to reflect any changes from remnant to non-remnant that occurred between May and September. New download of all point records from source databases. Batch 1 Wildlife Reclassification Proposals, signed by The Honorable Kate Jones MP, Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability, on 17 September 2009, have been reflected in this version. Incorporated all essential habitat Certified Updates from Version 2.1.
Version 2.1 – Updated the full extent of Mahogany Glider essential habitat after it was discovered that large areas of habitat were missed out in version 2.0 due to a technical issue. Critical missing areas were added in via an essential habitat Certified Update on 27 November 2006, but this new version represents a complete replacement of Mahogany Glider essential habitat over the entire extent of its range. No other models have been updated. Species information (species names, NCA status, point locations) have not been updated, and remain current as of the last release, 25 September 2006. Any remnant vegetation that has become non-remnant as the result of a RE Certified Update since version 2.0 was released has been removed from this dataset.
Version 2.0 – Updated essential habitat to RE Version 5.0 (December 2005) and including RE Certified Updates to 31 July 2006. Inclusion of Habitat Suitability Modeling for the Koala in Southeast Queensland, except in those areas (KSA, KCA & UKA) covered by the Koala Conservation Plan (October 2006). Inclusion of false water-rat Habitat Suitability Modeling in the Central Queensland Coast bioregion. Removal of Brigalow Belt Models. New download of all point records from source databases. Flora records only sourced from Herbrecs ( previously sourced from a number of different systems ). Included flora and fauna records for the Einasleigh Uplands bioregion. Incorporated all Essential Habitat Certified Updates to date.
Version 1.1 - Updated essential habitat within Lot 1 SL808670. An area within this lot was previously mapped as 12.3.6/12.3.1, and listed as Essential Habitat for a threatened frog (Crinia tinnula). The RE mapping has been amended and some areas have been changed to 12.11.5. RE 12.11.5 is not listed as habitat for the frog under the model developed. Consequently, the area now described as 12.11.5 is no longer essential habitat.Only essential habitat in areas containing assessable vegetation under the provisions of the Vegetation Management Act 1999 are represented in this map.</statement>
