The pre-clearing regional ecosystem maps and data are based on extensive field survey, analysis of aerial photographs, satellite imagery and detailed site data, and assessment of other data such as geology and soil mapping and historical survey plans. The survey and mapping of regional ecosystems of Queensland provides information and maps for business, landholders, regional groups, non-government organizations, government departments, local government and industry for planning and management of the natural environment, developments and vegetation restoration. A layer indicating the boundaries of the differing scales is available upon request.
The positional accuracy of regional ecosystem data, mapped at a scale of 1:100,000, is 100 metres. The map scale of 1:50,000 applies to the Wet Tropics and part of south-eastern Queensland and map amendments areas. The map scale of 1:25,000 applies to the Brisbane City Council area within south-eastern Queensland. The regional ecosystem descriptions, are available for download on the Queensland Government website. (Search on: Regional Ecosystem Description Database).

The pre-clearing vegetation is the vegetation present before clearing. Mapping of pre-clearing vegetation is based on the interpretation of the landscape as depicted on aerial photos or satellite imagery (Landsat, Spot, Earth-i), and ground truthed on a limited sample of known points. The Queensland Herbarium uses the 1:80,000 black and white 1960s photos as the standard imagery for mapping pre-clearing vegetation. The structural classification system is based on a modified Walker and Hopkins (1990).
Where vegetation has already been cleared on these aerial photographs, the pre-clearing vegetation is reconstructed by the botanist using available information, including landform, soils, geology, field data (remnant roadside native vegetation) and ecological knowledge. In addition, historical survey records of vegetation types and older aerial photos (if they exist) are used extensively in this reconstruction.
Technical processes: Vegetation boundaries are drawn over aerial photographs and digitised. Boundaries are referenced primarily to rectified Landsat or more recently, Sentinel imagery (SLATS, DES) or to orthophotos if available. Field survey provided partial verification of boundaries.
Related layers include: remnant regional ecosystems for 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2006b, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021.
The positional accuracy at a scale of 1:100,000, is 100 metres; Survey sites +/- 10m. Positional accuracy of the determination of polygon boundaries is noted in the field 'L', which is a reliability code and given as either A, B or C for high, moderate and low confidence in accuracy of polygon boundaries. The level is determined on the basis of the reliability of interpretation of photo pattern /reflectance of remotely sensed data (aerial photographs and rectified Landsat TM imagery) and on the positioning and frequency of sites and traverses.
This dataset is GDA2020 compatible. The source data, and therefore the captured features are georeferenced as GDA94 (horizontal only). The horizontal accuracy of the geo-referencing and/or data collection method for this example is greater than the datum offset between GDA94 and GDA2020 (1.8 meters). The resulting dataset has been nominated as a low-accuracy GDA2020 dataset. As this data has not been directly measured in GDA2020, nor transformed to GDA2020 the resulting data is 'GDA2020 Compatible', not Compliant.
