<idAbs>The mapping aims to:- Support plan making agencies considering adopting the Sea Turtle Sensitive Area voluntary model code by Department of State Development Infrastructure and Planning (DSDMIP).- Assist with the interpretation of the draft National Light Pollution Guidelines for Wildlife released by the Australian Government’s Department of Agriculture Water and the Environment (https://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/migratory-species/draft-national-light-pollution-guidelines).- Assist asset managers and developers wishing to adopt best practice approaches when installing new lighting near turtle nesting areas. The mapping is a line representing underlying sea turtle nesting areas. The inclusion of rocky coastlines and headlands is deliberate to reflect how artificial light can influence not only the behaviour of hatchlings on the beach but also the wayfinding of both adult turtles and hatchlings in coastal waters around nesting beaches.Local refinement is required to determine “turtle sensitive areas” under the Sea Turtle Sensitive Area voluntary model code.</idAbs>
<idPurp>This mapping identifies known beaches and surrounding rocky coastlines that are nesting areas for sea turtles that are listed as 'threatened' wildlife defined under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 (NCA).
Nesting areas in this mapping are categorised as:
- very significant - over 40% of the species or genetic stock rely on the nesting area
- significant - over 1% of the species or genetic stock rely on the nesting area
- present - below 1% of the species or genetic stock rely on the nesting area</idPurp>

<statement>INITIAL SIGNIFICANCE
Data to determine level of nesting area significance was based on the following sources:
-Significant nesting beaches study (Department of Environment and Science, 2018), including all significant nesting beaches south of Cairns on the mainland and on major islands
-Commonwealth environment department critical habitat (nesting)
- Queensland Marine Turtle Conservation Strategy, Department of Environment and Science (DES) 2018,
Significant nesting beaches
1. All beaches from significant nesting beaches
2. All areas from critical habitat (nesting) in the Gulf, Cape and generally outside of DES significant nesting beaches study area
Very high significance (or special significance) nesting beaches
3. Significant nesting beaches study that are within areas listed in DES 2018* Table 1 (index monitoring sites for nesting)
4. Critical habitat (nesting) beaches within areas listed in DES 2018* Table 2 (major rookeries) and Table 3 (Major rookeries)
LIMITATIONS OF INITIAL SOURCES
-DES significant nesting beaches study area limited to major islands and mainland coast south of Cairns
-Mapped significant beaches date back only to 1975
- Currently mapping significant beaches pre-1975
REFINEMENT AND CONUSLTATION
-Refinement of significant nesting areas was made by Pers Comms discussions with the Department's Chief Scientist (MarineTurtle) between August and September 2019.
The draft nesting areas data was released for consultation by local governement and agencies in September 2019.
As a result of consultation additional areas werer refined in Noverber 2019.
NESTING AREA DATA
Beaches and nesting areas were sourced from various sources the below:
- Queensland coastline
- Regional ecosystems, Preclear, version 11, landzone 1 lines
- Toe of the Frontal Dune, Department of Environment and Science, 2015
TURTLE SIGHTING DATA
Turtle nesting and sightings were derived from the Turtle Mapping Database (Department of Environment and Science) accessed June 2019.
